silence is the essence of us all

It’s Vicki Woodyard day at unlitlight central today. I am so thrilled to know that Vicki’s new book Life With A Hole In It: that’s how the light gets in is out and available for purchase. But more of that later. First, a little treat about silence:

There is an essential silence that continually blesses us all.  I feel it as I type words into the void.  It unreels like an old movie, the kind where no voice was able to be heard.  It breathes life into the words of this world.  It animates everything.  Trees know it and rocks absorb and emit it.  Stars beam it down to us in the form of light.  How blessed we are to be that silence and to share it freely.  We do that because it is effortless.  A strained silence is noisy whereas essential silence is a benediction on this weary world.

The silence seeps in around the cracks of suffering. Like light, it is who we are. As love, it transforms ugliness into grace and grace into miracle.  I tend a piece of this silence.  I am farming it so that flowers grow tall and the soul’s lushness is revealed petal by petal, word by word.

Silence is the essence of us all.  The void from which we spring peppers the world with hallelujahs.  It softens the suffering soul and revives the desert landscape.  It also shows us the beauty of the desert and the dark valleys of loss.  Lest I become overwrought, I shall stop on a dime’s worth of words so you can feel like a millionaire within it all.
~ Vicki Woodyard

“… this time you found your voice and your passion to tell the truth yourself.  And that is how you go on.  Like the Energizer Bunny, you run on the battery of the beyond within.  It is a mystery and a blessing how everything works out when you determine to go the distance.”

a mind-shift of great subtlety

One Life-thread flows through everything.  This isn’t some poetic fantasy; you can find out for yourself if you go deeply into the appearance of ‘things’ – any things, including the ‘you’ thing and the ‘me’ thing.  What you find is that nothing – no thing – is a thing with independent existence.  Everything you put under your microscope turns out to be a complex web of interdependent relationships connected to every other complex web of interdependent relationships.  We paste a name on this seething mass of quantum energies and hey ho! – it becomes real.

Except, it isn’t.  It’s actually a field of infinite possibilities which we have attempted to freeze-dry by labeling.  Look closely enough and you’ll find that no objects could ever be said to exist.  Buddhists call the inherent no-thing-ness of phenomena emptiness, or void.  It doesn’t mean appearance isn’t happening and you must be a nutter because to you, it IS – it means that appearance is simply appearance.

So what can be said about the web of connections?  What’s the stuff of this web?  It’s immaterial; it can only be inferred.  This isn’t deep metaphysics, any more than Life’s presence is inferred in a body that’s up and alive.  The web, imo, is Life itself.  And that’s about all I can say because I’m a zafu-sitter not a scientist.

But as far as I’m concerned it’s the profound understanding of emptiness and the web of Life energy which animates the field of Infinite Potential (as posited by David Bohm) that constitutes self-realization.  It changes everything.  It’s a mind-shift of great subtlety and it is irreversible.

Without self-realization no virtue is genuine.
It is only when you arrive at the deepest conviction
that the same life flows through everything,
and that you ARE that life,
that you can begin to love naturally and spontaneously.

bright naked beingness

What an odd sort of a night. The body is still somewhat travel-weary so it trotted off to bed early. There’s usually a time of sitting, settling, checking-in with Reality before snuggling under the doona, and last night was no exception. The mind was very bright. Sleep came instantly and went on for some hours.

Then suddenly one was jolted awake by what felt like an electric shock surging through the whole body. The really strange thing was that although I was asleep, something was aware of both the jolt and the waking up. “That was a bit weird,” thinking said.

So – I’m lying there wide awake in the moon-lit night wondering where all the energy now vibrating the body has come from. Feeling like a spring chicken and contemplating getting up to do something … then I hear a shout: “Be Beingness!”

Instantly, with no intention or volition, there was a turning, a converging of the energy we call attention … back. The sensation was physical.

“Back”? No. Backwards? Sort of. As though Aware-ing was falling out the back of the brain and into … space. And the whole of space was singing silence and it was breathing. This was not a dream; I have never felt more fully present.

There were no lights. There was no bliss. There was no center or reference-point. There was only this vast void, breathing.

It continued for some hours before sleep-tide washed in. And in the dawn, when Kookaburras’ cackling chorus rallied the sleeping world, it was still present. It’s here now, as I type and as your ‘I’ reads; it has always been here: bright naked Beingness.

This is what ‘I’ is.

~

‘I’ am the ‘I’

‘I’ come forth from the void into light,
Pua mai au mai ka po iloko o ka malamalama,

‘I’ am the breath that nurtures life,
Owau no ka ha, ka mauli ola,

‘I’ am that emptiness, that hollowness beyond all consciousness,
Owau no ka poho, ke ka’ele mawaho a’e o no ike apau.

The ‘I’, the Id, the All.
Ka I, Ke Kino Iho, na Mea Apau.

‘I’ draw my bow of rainbows across the waters,
Ka a’e au i ku’u pi’o o na anuenue mawaho a’e o na kai a pau,

The continuum of minds with matters.
Ka ho’omaumau o na mana’o ame na mea a pau.

‘I’ am the incoming and outgoing of breath,
Owau no ka “Ho”, a me ka “Ha”

The invisible, untouchable breeze,
He huna ka makani nahenahe,

The undefinable atom of creation.
Ka ‘Hua’ huna o Kumulipo.

‘I’ am the ‘I’.
Owau no ka ‘I’.
