it never ends!

a dream was born of love

like a flower, budding in the field of time
it swelled, spread its petals
shared its perfume with complete abandon
smiled under the sun’s kisses
was tossed by many a foul storm
surviving almost a century
of spinning orbits around its bright star

“It never ends!” she exclaimed, exuberant,
just a few breaths before her last exhale,
before she abandoned our solar lover
and melted into the arms of
our eternal Beloved

a dream died

yet the love, the love remains,
imperishable, inescapable
and always beyond the reach of memory

A little memorial piece. It’s been four years today … by the day rather than date.
(How beautiful that this year’s remembrance falls within the Easter weekend.)
I remain amazed and more grateful with every passing year for that final teaching:
IT NEVER ENDS

memo from a madonna

Our Lady of Grace - c. 1470 Languedoc

She looks one way
He looks the other –
don’t tell me her far-seeing heart’s not
breaking

and yet

this is her memo to me:

if you can’t trust
that every sentient soul
is moving
– by Divine default –
along their unique lifeline
towards reclamation of all they
agreed to forget

namely
their unborn, changeless, true nature
(aka God)

how can you trust your own
crazy convoluted life-path?

and with that trust intact
how can you speak of tragedy
and evil and every form of
unspeakable suffering
without drowning
in
all-encompassing
compassion?

this awareness is not aware that it is aware

To say that “awareness is aware of itself”
is to split it into two:
one bit as the viewer
and the other as the view.

But is this really so?
(Not according to any teaching
or dogma or philosophy; no,
save me from second-hand ‘truths’!)
What’s the experience right here,
beyond the cunning concepts
that inevitably appear?

Awareness awares.
That’s all that I can say;
its ceaseless unlit light
both creates and acts its play.

Even emptiness is empty
and mind a four-letter word;
my gut rips wide open
as I fall on my sword.

Just this! I cry –

yet instantly it’s clear
that thusness is a step too far
from the lucid living light
that’s plainly shining

your original luminous brilliance

“… whose only beacon
is this unlit light”

Although it might seem to be the case if the three little words are taken literally and out of context, THIS UNLIT LIGHT does not refer to some kind of light – mystical or mundane – that needs to be lit, like a candle or a light bulb. In some scriptures there are references to mystical light that must be lit, but that’s not what is referred to here. Let’s be clear about this beloveds, so that we’re dancing on the same page.

The phrase “this unlit light”, as I use it, refers to a light whose brilliant origin cannot be found – a light that was already alight prior to the “big bang” moment, and every moment imagined, dreamed, or experienced in any way by anything possessing sentience. It’s described as “unlit” because it has never been ‘turned-on’ or ‘lit’ by any known technology, mental or otherwise.

This self-luminous light is sometimes called transparent, nondual present awareness; it is seamlessly intimate to every sentient being – so close it cannot be perceived, yet present as the awareing of every perception.

“this unlit light” points to the luminous clarity of awareness that knows, and in which knowing all existence and experience are birthed and named, even as it remains unmoved. Actually, to say that it “knows” is a step too far. (Even to say it “alights” is untrue, for it does n-o-t-h-i-n-g.  Words about the ineffable are automatically a contradiction in terms.)

Diamond Clarity

If readers of this little blog have scrolled down to the bottom of the page they will have come upon these words from J Krishnamurti – they have been there since its launch 3 years ago  –

A mind that is awake, intelligent, free, why should it need,
why should it have, any “experience” at all?
Light is light; it does not ask for more Light.

Light is light. Nothing is required for this light to be alight; both darkness and brilliance are as its shadow.

“this unlit light” – like Bankei’s “Unborn mind” – is right now awareing these strings of words displayed on this brightly lit screen. Simply awareing. Not judging, reacting or even understanding; not labeling or seeking meaning. Those functions are the province of thought and memory – and the miraculous movement of creative story-smithing. Stories are without number, and if one of them includes the need for the Great Light to be lit, no problem – enjoy the dance!

It might sound outrageous and irreverent, but “this unlit light” couldn’t give a toss about nonduality or any other philosophy. It couldn’t care less whether we’re spaced-out in the absolute, or beavering away heart-fully in the relative, or perfectly aligned in wisdom-compassion. It couldn’t care less whether we’re a hip Advaita teacher or a fierce dispeller of ignorance, a serenely blissful yogini or a story-sabotaged suffering seeker. It’s utterly unaffected.

Utterly unaffected.

It simply abides. Receiving everything; rejecting nothing.

That’s why it’s felt as unconditional Love; that’s why it’s called Beloved.

Your true nature is something never lost to you,
even in moments of delusion,
nor is it gained at the moment of enlightenment.
It is the nature of your own mind,
the source of all things,
your original luminous brilliance.
You, the richest person in the world,
have been going around laboring and begging,
when all the while the treasure you seek is within you.
It is who you are.

rest your weary heart and mind

An extract from the page I added recently:
the great perfection

Simply rest in this transparent, nondual present awareness.

Make yourself at home in the natural state of pure presence, just being, not doing anything in particular.
Present awareness is empty, open, and luminous; not a concrete substance, yet not nothing.

Empty, yet it is perfectly cognizant, lucid, aware.

As if magically, not by causing it to be aware, but innately aware, awareness continuously functions.

These two sides of present awareness or Rigpa – its emptiness and its cognizance (lucidity) – are inseparable.

Emptiness and luminosity (knowing) are inseparable.

They are formless, as if nothing whatsoever, ungraspable, unborn, undying; yet spacious, vivid, buoyant.

Nothing whatsoever, yet Emaho!, everything is magically experienced.

Simply recognize this.
Look into the magical mirror of mind and appreciate this infinite magical display.

With constant, vigilant mindfulness, sustain this recognition of empty, open, brilliant awareness.
Cultivate nothing else.
There is nothing else to do, or to undo.
Let it remain naturally.

Don’t spoil it by manipulating, by controlling, by tampering with it, and worrying about whether you are right or wrong, or having a good meditation or a bad meditation.

Leave it as it is, and rest your weary heart and mind.

glad tidings of great joy

For the intrepid bunch of readers who find their way, now and then, to this blog  –  this little Christmas story is my gift to you, with love and gratitude.

Mosaic of the Three Wise Men, Church of San Vitale, Ravenna, 1st Century AD

Once upon a time in the wondrous world of Mind there lived three powerful Kings.  (Yes, I know what you’re expecting – it being this time of year and all – but this is my story and I have artistic license to twist the tale.)  I’m calling these mad monarchs Me, Myself and Mine, and naturally enough, their respective Kingdoms bear the same names.  They enjoyed unchallenged rulership, and seldom warred with each other as they were too busy making sure their own realms stayed dysfunctional.

Now, although their names might elicit a negative response from those of us who are onto the mirage of the ME, they were actually very Wise Men, because they intuited that they were only actors in some weird kind of dream.  They sensed they were mere puppets and they wanted to know who or what the Dream Director might be.

After many bi-hemispheric conferences and neo-cortical dialogues the three Kings came to consensus.  They had inquired deeply and had found that whatever actions they performed – whether kindly or cruel – there was a clear, luminous Awareness present that never ever changed.  They found that it wasn’t possible to separate out from this Awareness in order to observe It, and that It could only be known by falling into It and being It.

They decided to call this Awareness the Great Light in the East (because, like the sun, it makes mincemeat of darkness).

Then the Kings made a pact:  they would take a journey together – they would experiment with this Great Light.  They would follow It simply by Being It, and see what might happen.

Well as everyone knows, it didn’t take long…

The Great Light of Being brought them to a place within themselves that was deliciously quiet, humble, and unadorned by thought.  We’ll call it the Heart, although in another version of this story it’s called a stable.

And as the Kings entered this inner chamber called Heart, they found – each in their own way – their Christ Child awaiting them:  unborn, unconditioned, unsullied, unchanging; the sweetest Love they had ever known.

And the Kings hopped off their hobbyhorses and fell upon their knees.  They offered their Kingdoms to the Innocent One:  Me, Myself and Mine.  And these gifts were more priceless to the Child than Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, for as far as He was concerned, the gift beyond price was the Kings’ heart-felt humility.

No one really knows what happened to the three Kings after that, but in my story they went back to their Kingdoms with new names:  Awake, Aware and Alight.  And they brought glad tidings of great joy to their Kingdoms for ever and ever after.

Arise, shine: for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee…and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising…all they from Seba and Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth praises of the Lord. (Isaiah 60:1-6).
