renounce

4am. Suddenly wideawake. Deep winter darkness. A hushed silence broken by one word echoing through the field called body:

renounce

I sat up. Lit a candle. Renounce? How curious that this unlikely word arose in mind here, at exactly the same time in the morning (it was a Saturday, too) as when she exhaled her last.

Pedant that I am, I reached sleepily for the dictionaries. I’m aware that my native tongue often hides subtle meanings beneath its everyday usage. First I clarified the breadth of meaning; as I did so the word took on skin-prickling relevance to my life, as it plays, nowadays.

Well, I thought, this is worth a scribble.

The dictionaries elicited an unarguable take on the life of this unofficial renunciate – I’ve inserted the gist into the pasted dictionary text:

Renounce – (rɪˈnaʊns)
v.t. & i., & n.

1. Consent formally to abandon, surrender, give up, (claim, right, possession).

– abandon, surrender, give up, all claims of personal doership, all stories of trauma, blame and fault, all rights to fruits of actions (especially those applauded), all possessions that are subject to change…

2. Repudiate, refuse to recognise longer, decline association or disclaim relationship with, withdraw from, discontinue, forsake, (~ treaty, principles, person’s authority, all thought of, design, attempt, friend, friendship; ~ the world, abandon society or temporal affairs).

– repudiate, refuse to recognise longer, decline association AND disclaim relationship with all that does not enliven, beautify, arouse gentleness and kindness; any phenomena (including people) posing as the Real or the agent of the Real. (The Real has no agents. Unless you include everything.)

– withdraw from, discontinue, forsake all conditioned assertions which deny the actual intimacy and interdependence of all Life.

3. Refuse or resign right or position esp. as heir or trustee.

– refuse to take any hierarchical, authoritative position, or allow others to sign one up. (Which is not to abdicate responsibility, but to be perfectly placed – in choiceless awareness – to act in the instant.)

4. Give up some habit, pursuit, etc, voluntarily, e.g. to renounce smoking.

– give up the habit of pretending to be an unawakened ‘me’. It’s entirely dishonest.

5. In Card Games – to failure to follow suit because one has no cards of the same suit led.

– and in the Life Game, fail to follow, always. Repeat – fail to follow. The lifemap wearing one’s name is unique – a one-off – its unfolding exquisitely designed according to Life’s unknowable agenda (and being a groupie is always a self-betrayal).

[From Old French renoncer, from Latin renuntiāre to disclaim, from re-+ nuntiāre to announce, from nuntius messenger – Collins English Dictionary and The Concise Oxford Dictionary]

Five times I say: I do, I do, I do, I do, I do.

And another twice, because I’m fond of sevens (and so was she):

I do. I do.

without thought the body simply disappears

At the same time that there is the life and experience of being Vonna (this particular body); at the same time there is no Vonna to be found.  There is no boundary between inside and outside. Sounds, even sites, are “in here” as much as thoughts and feelings are “in here.”  In direct experience, without ideas superimposed of inside and outside, in direct experience, there are no walls on which to be on either side of; it’s all a seamless whole, all of it…

I don’t think big explanations and descriptions help toward the experience of absolute intimacy and knowing directly the inseparability of awareness and phenomena.

To either seek an out of body experience or to revel in one seems pointless at best, and imaginary only, just as an in the body experience is imaginary.  The body is a concept only, it’s made of thought.

Without thought telling us where and what and who the body is or “belongs to” there is no body at all!  Without the benefit of memory (thought) you couldn’t know anything about “your body.”  How old is it?  What size is it?  What is its gender? Without thought the body is only random sensations without an actual outline.  Without thought to hold it together the body simply disappears.

a mind-shift of great subtlety

One Life-thread flows through everything.  This isn’t some poetic fantasy; you can find out for yourself if you go deeply into the appearance of ‘things’ – any things, including the ‘you’ thing and the ‘me’ thing.  What you find is that nothing – no thing – is a thing with independent existence.  Everything you put under your microscope turns out to be a complex web of interdependent relationships connected to every other complex web of interdependent relationships.  We paste a name on this seething mass of quantum energies and hey ho! – it becomes real.

Except, it isn’t.  It’s actually a field of infinite possibilities which we have attempted to freeze-dry by labeling.  Look closely enough and you’ll find that no objects could ever be said to exist.  Buddhists call the inherent no-thing-ness of phenomena emptiness, or void.  It doesn’t mean appearance isn’t happening and you must be a nutter because to you, it IS – it means that appearance is simply appearance.

So what can be said about the web of connections?  What’s the stuff of this web?  It’s immaterial; it can only be inferred.  This isn’t deep metaphysics, any more than Life’s presence is inferred in a body that’s up and alive.  The web, imo, is Life itself.  And that’s about all I can say because I’m a zafu-sitter not a scientist.

But as far as I’m concerned it’s the profound understanding of emptiness and the web of Life energy which animates the field of Infinite Potential (as posited by David Bohm) that constitutes self-realization.  It changes everything.  It’s a mind-shift of great subtlety and it is irreversible.

Without self-realization no virtue is genuine.
It is only when you arrive at the deepest conviction
that the same life flows through everything,
and that you ARE that life,
that you can begin to love naturally and spontaneously.

awesome thing, perception

a no-thing itself,
it makes up the web of
space and time
so that the world can appear

awesome thing, conceptualization

a no-thing itself,
it makes up the labels that
name and explain
those worldly appearances

awesome thing, Awareness

a no-thing itself,
it does nothing at all
but enjoy the View!

meltdown is immanent

perception’s toolbox of technologies comes standard.
it’s hard-wired into sentient ‘be’-ings.

but ‘personal’ applications of those technologies, with the ensuing explanations, meanings and beliefs about objects/events perceived, are wholly acquired.

these acquisitions, imports from social consensus via parents, education, church and state, constitute the software called self.

don’t ask me how, but unclouded apperception of this phenomenon inserts a terminal virus into the hardware.

meltdown is immanent and inescapable.
