the cathedral of emptiness

Sometimes

saying ‘yes’ to your heart’s longing for silence

requires an unapologetic ‘no’ to the world

with its ceaseless need to script your story.

The world will dissect your motives, analyze your actions, categorize your traumas;

it will never accept your silence.

Silence is the word-wielding world’s worst enemy; you may well be spurned,

even by those who claim affection for you.

But your heart, quivering with quiet,

will deliver you into the cathedral of emptiness –

where the “roar on the other side of silence”

– the holy nameless name –

sounds existence into shape and form.

wideawakeness is … too easy

the sheer simplicity

the utter obviousness

the unavoidability

of

T H I S

which we ceaselessly chase

as some wild idea

is its greatest

disguise

BOO!

think on this, whispered the candlelight

187

folded up on my zafu
venus rising, a brilliance
above the coral horizon
where soon the first
radiance of a new day
will emerge

legions of bats, black
against indigo, are
winging their silent way
back to their favorite
over-day treetops

but it’s still dark enough
for my candle to be
queen of the shadows
and she whispers to me:

“If the light of your awareing
wasn’t brighter than my own,
how could you see me?

I am but a shadow-play
of the unviewable, unlit
Light that you are!

Think on this.  And when the
sun climbs over the eastern rim
and reaches into this tiny patch
of sacred space, undressing
the dark,
think on this again.”

echoes from emptiness

these words are clumsy feet

The one who grieves –
who finds it is their ‘work’

The one who’s sad –
who aches for yesterday

The one who awares –
who beams this unlit light

The one who woes –
who keens to love’s goneness

The one who weeps –
who melts in holy love

who – or what – is that One?

These words are clumsy feet
(dual by default)
dancing the dream

The  Beloved rests
unmoved
impartial
in the wings
caps in lap:

choreographer, director
actor and audience

absorbed within
Its one-wo:man act
and never leaving Home
for even half a heartbeat

yes, but can you live it?

Well –

if you’ve had a peek into
wild wideawakeness –

if the jigsaw pieces of
a lifetime’s seeking
have grouped themselves
into an apperception
that’s savaged
all your ideas about
what this IS
and knocked both your
feely fantasies and your
intellectual understanding
clear out of mind –

if you’ve fallen
head-first into this
simple suchness,
there’s no longer a
question of “embodying it” or
“living it.”

So my answer is no.

How can you

live the Reality

that lives You?

And yes.

How can You not?

thank you for the hairy ones

This little blog was launched two years ago, on Mothers’ Day 2009, and dedicated to my sweet mother, Miriam. I’m a little late this year – it’s already Monday in this part of the world – but a post is pressing this morning, a prayer of gratitude for all mothers, including the miraculous and long-suffering Earth that is truly our lifelong womb.

Beloved Life

Thank you for Mothers

Thank you for all your awesome
ways
of replicating yourself
from simple cell-division
and eggs a zillion ways
to womb-birthed, pouch-held
babes

Thank you for the hairy
ones
the crusty, the creepy,
the slithery, the feathered ones,
the ones we love and
those that scare us silly

Thank you for the ones we call
human
our own, who built our scaffolding
from their own cells so that
the Light of your Awareness
would have a home

Thank you for their
generosity
regardless of our opinions,
our grievances, our stories, for
they made it possible for you
to create yourself
and to Know yourself

and to Know yourself
from birthing unto birthing as
Beloved

once you know

Once you know

and you know that you know

that you are unknowable

Knowingness

and you fall headlong

into that wideawake wonderment

taking ITs name

as your own

at last,

at last,

IT takes over.

IT creates a new order

in the apparition

called body

and the energy mandala

called mind.

IT choreographs the dance:

the giving,

the emptying,

the cleansing

of the field

and

the opening and ordering

of a new life

mandala

ceaselessly forming and

re-forming and

alive

with energy,

shimmering

with Light,

and you find your place

as ITs centre

knowing

you are home at last.
