a little prayer for the solstice

For most readers of this little blog, it’s the summer solstice that will be celebrated today.  But for those of us in the lands south of the Equator, today is the shortest day, the darkest day of the year.  It is winter.  And here on my misty mountain it is raining and chilly – a perfect day for a prayer to the Unlit Light – the Beloved known by a thousand names – the One that never fails to listen and to love.  It’s a deeply personal prayer – and yet, I know it is shared by you and you and you, no matter what your gender may be.

may I be a mother
to the motherless

may I comfort them

may I give them shelter

may I foster their creativity

may I assure them they are loved

may I re-mind them of their brilliant life-fire

may I be shown the way

may I be a Mother Miriam

as was she who allowed me life:

an invitation to extreme creativity

If creativity is radical discontinuity in a pattern of thought, then going on retreat is an invitation to extreme creativity.

Retreat is radical discontinuity in a pattern of being.

It’s not so much a movement towards anything, although it might it might involve wandering in unknown places or bunkering down in a metaphoric cave.  It’s more of a movement away from the known life with all its impositions, distractions and habitude.

As the disappearing Dharma teacher said – it’s a total commitment to awakening.  Not just in little glimpses, but in rock solid steadiness.

You will know when you’re ready and you must go.  There won’t be a second thought.  You won’t be driven by your mind or even your heart and certainly not by your feelings for they are the most fickle of all.

You’ll be driven by Grace, by a sweet and unquestionable imperative that will shock you and your N & D.  Resisting the call is possible but the consequences to health and sanity are dire.

When the invitation comes, grab it, beloved.  Park your procrastination into long-term storage and walk, empty, into the arms of Life.

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do –
determined to save
the only life you could save.

all that dignifies, gives life, and astonishes

Another rendition of The Lord’s Prayer, or Jesus Prayer, translated from the original Aramaic by Mark Hathaway.

O source of the Wave,

which envelops and embraces the cosmos,
sustaining and renewing it at each moment,

Penetrate the deepest recesses of our hearts,
and there create a space for Thy holy shrine.

In this nuptial chamber,
conceive the creative potency of Thy Reign,

So that we may give birth to the embodiment of Thy desire:
as from the emanation, so too in form.

With passion and soul let us generate
that which is needed to sustain life this day.

Release us from the bondage of our karma,
as we free others from the captivity of their guilt.

And do not let superficiality cause us to vacillate,
but rather free us from all that impedes growth.

For from Thee bursts forth all that
dignifies, gives life, and astonishes,
from cycle to cycle, restoring wholeness.  Ameyn.

my niche is the unknowable

Mary Sedivy - Pink clouds turn into roses

About thirty years ago I confessed to a kindly iridologist that I felt I had failed to find my ‘niche’ in life.  He peered into my bright blue eye-maps and remarked that it was strange, because everything he could read there indicated that I was a highly capable person who could find a niche in many avenues of expertise.

It worried me, that feeling of being niche-less.  I was in awe of those who seemed, from a young age, to know exactly what they wished to do in the world and set about achieving it.  And it wasn’t helped by those who knew the potential here and kept asking when I was going to fully explore (exploit?) it.  I was in my late 40s and still wondering what I would be when I grew up.

I had all the right tools: a reasonably sane brain, a good education, some skills as an educator as well as in the area of art and design, but my life-path seemed like a meandering groping from one neti-neti to the next.

I tried being a teacher, a broadcaster, a fashion designer, a wife, a lover, a wandering yogini, a ‘professional’ artist.  All these niches ultimately failed to fit. The only role that held some promise was that of the artist, but the funny thing was that whenever the flow of genuine creating was going on in the studio, I wasn’t there.  I mean, ‘artist-me’ was AWOL.  In its place there was a vast, spacious, ‘I’-ness playing outside of all my small ideas of what should be happening.  And the moment the ‘artist-me’ tried to examine this mysterious movement, it would vaporize.  It was ungraspable and unknowable.

Later I found a philosophy that made sense of this mystery – it is spoken about by sages and artists alike as the movement of pure nondual Awareness. But back then it was a great mystery to me; it put the fire under a lifetime’s exploration of creativity.  And it eventually delivered me to the niche I had given up any hope of finding.

My niche turned out to be that ineffable nondual Awareness itself.  And the amazing thing is that it always had been!  It had been my preoccupation for decades, yet I had failed to recognize that it was a valid contender for the niche stakes.  The realization actually only hit once I was past the age and stage where niche-finding matters.  Truly, I can be quite slow

When the penny dropped, a lifetime of seemingly incoherent bits of ridiculousness fell into place.  I fell about laughing like a lunatic.  The absurdity and awesomeness of it!  The beauty and simplicity and grace of it!  Like … landing on a cloud of rose petals … sinking into their silken perfume … resting, at last … knowing that you never have to leave … even if it were possible!

Mark Hathaway has generously given me permission to post versions of the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer, or Jesus Prayer, published on his website: www.visioncraft.org These renditions are based on his studies with Saadi Neil Douglas-Klotz, whose website is www.abwoon.com.

Mark is an author, web designer, and freelance “ecologian” studying the inter-relationships between ecology, economics, spirituality, and cosmology.  His latest book, co-authored with Leonardo Boff, is called The Tao of Liberation – Exploring the Ecology of Transformation; please go to www.taoofliberation.com/Home.aspx for more information.

For those interested in learning more about the Aramaic version of Jesus’ sayings, Prayers of the Cosmos by Neil Douglas-Klotz (Harper and Row, 1990) is highly recommended.

O Divine Womb,
birthing forth the river of blessing which runs through all,

Soften the ground of our being,
and hallow in us a space for the planting of thy presence.

In our depths,
sow thy seed with its greening-power
that we might be midwives to thy Reign.

Then, let each of our actions
bear fruit in accordance with Thy desire.

Impart to us the wisdom to bring forth the gifts of the earth
and share them daily according to the needs of each being,

And restore that which has been usurped
by injustice to its rightful owners,
as we restore to others that which is not our own.

Do not let us be seduced
by that which would divert us from our purpose,
but make us sensitive to the moment at hand.

For from Thy fertile soil is born the creativity,
the life-energy, and the dance,
from birthing to birthing.  Ameyn

thy queendom come

thy queendom come

Isabel Lilian Turner
26 October 1914 – 12 January 2011

The last of the ancient aunties has been fittingly farewelled. It was a small, simple, and serene funeral. Dying at 96 of plain weariness after a healthy creative life was cause for celebration and joy, yet we felt the quiet ache of her absence as well.

Included in the service was the recitation of The Lord’s Prayer, a mainstay and inspiration for so many souls. As I recited the lines I couldn’t help but inwardly offer up a different version, one that I learned many years ago. It’s a rendition from the Aramaic language, the tongue spoken by Jesus himself.

The version that we know as The Lord’s Prayer has been through the grist of Greek and the labyrinths of Latin before being translated into English, with all the modifications inherent in such a winding pathway. The shift, from a song of praise and supplication addressed to a matriarchal source of Life, to a patriarchal prayer, happened somewhere along the way.

Because Aramaic is a language that – like most indigenous languages – allows for many different possibilities to be present simultaneously, there are many different renditions. They are like subtly different perfumes given off by a single glorious flower.

I came away from the funeral with a little project – to post as many versions from the Aramaic as I can find, or gain permission to publish.

Perhaps you have a favorite version you’d like to contribute?

O cosmic Birther of all radiance and matter!

Soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where Your Presence can abide.

Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered to bear the fruit of Your mission.

Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.

Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish.

Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us, as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.

Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.

For You are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth-power and fulfillment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.

Ameyn

this is awesome, this is wondrous

A week ago I said goodbye to those tropical skies that smile and shower upon the red earth and the tall gums of Capricornia Australia.  I bade farewell to the cackling Kookaburras, the inquisitive geckos, the huge Huntsman spiders…

I said goodbye and they said – Why do you farewell us, You who create us with a simple glance?  A touch?  A sniff or a taste?  A thought?  Are you leaving your mind behind?

A week ago I said hello to the steely temperate skies that hover low, gusty and wet, over this soft green land, Aotearoa New Zealand.  I said hello to the flowering Kowhai and the Tuis probing deep for nectar.  I said hello to the spindly flax, the Toi Tois and the tall cabbage trees tossing in the wind.

And they said – Welcome to yet another empty canvas within Your ever-creative mind.  Welcome, and thank You for giving us existence, for causing us to appear!  Without Your incandescent mind we remain mere patterns of potential in the womb of Emptiness!

This is awesome, this is wondrous:  the knowingness that wherever One goes, there is always only OneSelf unfolding its display in OneMind.

And there’s more – this knowingness, dear One, wears your name-tag.  But don’t be mistaken – it isn’t yours, or mine.  It’s its own OneSelf.

OneSelf, OneMind:  One – and only One.
